LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

A program of enrichment 100 level courses in English, reading, and mathematics is required of all students who enter Gardner-Webb with background deficiencies in any or all of the above areas. Students in the Learning Assistance Program are required to take a reduced or selected course load. The courses in this program are required in addition to the basic college requirements; however, college credit is earned for successful completion of all courses taken in the Learning Assistance Program.

Learning Assistance Program Exemption Policy

Disabled students requesting permission to bypass a learning assistance basic skills course in the area of their documented disability must adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Submit a written statement to the director of the Noel Program stating the request.
  2. Furnish appropriate documentation to substantiate the written request to the director of the Noel Program.
  3. The director of the Noel Program will set up a meeting with the student and appropriate University personnel to hear the request. "Appropriate University personnel" may include a person qualified to interpret documentation, the Learning Assistance Program director, the department chairperson, and the director of the Noel Program for the Disabled who will preside over the meeting.
  4. The above body will make a decision concerning the request.
  5. The student will have the opportunity to appeal the decision to the Educational Policies and Standards Committee.

The Learning Assistance Program provides study centers in the areas of writing, reading, and mathematics. The Program also provides assistance by arranging individual/group tutoring sessions and student access to materials on study and test-taking skills.

Tutorial Services

In addition to tutorial services provided by the Learning Assistance Program, several academic departments provide tutorial labs.
